A new documentary tracing the origins of dance music culture and the dizzying rise of the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) era will premiere on Amazon later this summer.
The documentary, “Waiting for the Drop: Rise of the Superstar DJs,” features interviews with artists such as Carl Cox, Kaskade, Hardwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, Paul Oakenfold, Tiësto, the Nervo sisters, and British artist Fatboy Slim.
The documentary examines the rise and fall of dance music in the UK, the Netherlands, and Ibiza during the 1980s and 1990s, and then traces the genre’s explosion in popularity in the early 2010s, an era commonly referred to as the rise of EDM (Electronic Dance Music), where the genre experienced unprecedented commercial growth in the United States, achieving major hits, generating huge revenues, and cementing DJs as “The New Stars of Rock.”

“Waiting for the Drop: Rise of the Superstar DJs” is the directorial debut of journalist and filmmaker Alexei Barrionuevo, who filmed the documentary in clubs and festivals across Europe and the United States. Barrionuevo was a staff writer for Billboard.
