In their first joint interview, Tracy Chapman and the album’s producer, David Kershenbaum, reflect on their decades-long journey and their reunion for the new vinyl reissue.
Upon the arrival of Tracy Chapman’s self-titled debut album on April 5, 1988, Billboard heralded it as an album filled with “rich and captivating music,” praising both her “husky, powerful voice” that “reminiscent of Phoebe Snow and Joni Mitchell” and her poignant songwriting, which addressed racism, injustice, and the yearning for a better life.

Spurred by its first single, “Fast Car,” the now-classic album has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, and Tracy Chapman was recently introduced to a new generation of fans thanks to country superstar Luke Combs’ 2023 cover of “Fast Car,” which topped Billboard’s Country Airplay chart for five weeks.
