Janet Jackson questioned Kamala Harris’ race in an interview published by The Guardian on Saturday (September 21).
When the journalist commented that the Americans could elect a black president, Janet interjected:
“Well, you know what they supposedly said? She’s not black, that’s what I heard, that she’s Indian. Her father is white. They found out that her father was white.”
She did not elaborate on where she had heard this information, which is false.
Kamala Harris is black and Indian. Her father, Donald J. Harris, came to the United States from Jamaica. Her mother, the late Shyamala Gopalan, came to the United States from India. They both moved to the United States to study at the University of California, Berkeley, where they met in 1962.
The Guardian again addressed the issue, asking her if she thinks the United States was ready for a president who is a woman of color.
“I don’t know,” Jackson said. “I honestly don’t want to answer that because I really don’t know. I think either way it’s going to be chaos.”
The singer’s quotes about Harris trended on social media, where many fans expressed disappointment that one of their idols would repeat misinformation.
