The Story of “The House Music Anthem (Move Your Body)”
DJ Marshall Jefferson was working nights at a Chicago post office when he gave house music its first authentic anthem.
The song was written in 1985 when, filled with inspiration, Jefferson brought some coworkers to his studio and recorded it in six hours, convinced he’d created something special. His friends disagreed, and even other DJs politely shrugged, but Jefferson persisted.
Where Jefferson’s friends saw doubt, DJ Ron Hardy saw potential and immediately played the song six times in a row during a set at The Music Box in Chicago, to enthusiastic approval from the audience.
Local DJs got their hands on a copy, and by the time “The House Music Anthem (Move Your Body)” was released in 1986, the hype had spread abroad, and the Chicago house sound had become a global movement.
