The “Radio Free Europe 2025” EP also commemorates the 75th anniversary of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), the stations that have provided uncensored news, analysis, and cultural programming in multiple languages in places where the press is not free since 1949.
RFE/RL currently broadcasts in 27 languages to 23 countries for an audience of nearly 50 million. It is often the only means of communication for those living under rigorous government censorship.

The R.E.M. effort comes after a federal appeals court in Washington ruled that, for now, the Trump administration can continue withholding funding from RFE/RL, temporarily reversing two previous court rulings that prevented the White House from cutting off funding to the outlet as part of its sweeping DOGE cost-cutting measures.
DOGE CEO Elon Musk wrote about RFE/RL in February on X: “Shut them down… Europe is free now… no one listens anymore… they’re just radical leftists talking to themselves.”
