Passengers from the US East Coast will no longer need to connect through major European hubs
From 31st May 2027, United Airlines will operate four direct flights per week from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, making it the only US carrier to offer a nonstop service to the island.
First teased in 2025, the new route will remove the need for passengers to connect via Madrid, Barcelona or London, significantly cutting journey times. Exact flight durations and fares have yet to be confirmed. Currently, return flights from Newark to neighbouring Mallorca typically cost between $900 and $1,400 for standard fares, with the most expensive tickets reaching upwards of $5,000.
All seats on the new service will have 4K OLED screens with Bluetooth connections. MileagePlus travellers can also access Starlink WiFi on board. An Airbus A321XLR will be used for the route, offering limited lie-flat seats, alongside Premium Economy, Economy Plus and Economy tickets. You can take a look at the interior layout below.
The Ibiza route forms part of United’s wider international expansion for 2027, with new services also announced from Newark to Marseille, Terceira, Ljubljana, Olbia and Catania, alongside new routes from San Francisco and Washington.
Earlier this summer, the Island Council of Ibiza revealed visitor numbers from North America for May 2026 had increased by more than 21% year-on-year, as reported by Periódico de Ibiza.
Between January and June, online searches for travel between the States and the island leapt 40% compared with the same period in 2025. Although United has officially confirmed its new Ibiza service, this is still pending approval from US and Spanish authorities. Earlier this year, Ibiza residents made renewed calls to tackle over-tourism on the island.
