Born in Cali, Colombia in 1983, and despite it being one of the most emblematic cities of Salsa in the world, Velásquez chose to compose Vallenato music. But before that, he was a journalist, model, and actor, and was selected by the news program Noti5 as Chico XY.
He worked at the radio station Musicalisima FM in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and then returned to Colombia as a voice-over artist for the RCN network. He then traveled to Spain where he worked with Radio Pueblo Nuevo, Euro Caribe, Hispana FM, and Fiesta FM in Madrid.

Finally, Velásquez settled in the United States where he officially launched his career as a composer, founding in 2025 one of the most promising Vallenato collectives in the genre: Duques del Vallenato.
The group, under the Duque Producciones label and under his general direction, initially collaborated with one of the most renowned producers, guitarist, arranger, composer, and producer Anibal Uribe, a man who has worked with El Binomio de Oro, Chiches del Vallenato, Jorge Celedón, and Felipe Peláez.
Julian Velásquez has written all of the material for Los Duques del Vallenato, and critics already agree that he is one of the most prolific composers of the new generation of vallenato.
