The debut album by Colombian DJ, producer, and composer EME will be released on September 19th. The album’s title is gangster-ish and was conceived at the Vincci Centrum Hotel in Madrid, where EME was spending time.
EME (real name Toby Holguin) is also the leader of the group Monsieur Job, which has had over 50 entries on the Latin Digital Song Sales, Latin Album Sales, Top Latin Albums and Heatseekers Albums charts, becoming the most successful artist from Cali, Colombia in Billboard history, surpassing local icons such as Grupo Niche and Guayacan Orquesta.
Another of Holguin’s side projects is Musica Para Mi Madre, an immersive contemporary jazz project that has been met with rave reviews from critics in the US and Europe. The second part of Musica Para Mi Madre 2.0, I LOVE BRASIL, is due out soon.
The EME World
Inspired by genres such as drum & bass, progressive house, melodic techno, downtempo, and jazz, ganster-ish is an electronic and cinematic journey where concepts and sonic adventures, also inspired by artists EME admires like Pink Floyd, converge in this experimental, complex, and, if possible, distressing universe, perhaps terrifying due to its real-life vision of today’s world. It is EME’s own personality reflected in his anxiety and rebellion.
Characters such as Charlie Chaplin protesting war and the global social situation, Bruce Lee reaffirming his position on water and its transformation in every human and earthly situation, Steve Jobs, the “Brazilian Torcida,” Real Madrid fans singing from Manchester, and others wander through the album’s tracks.
EME moved the songs on ganster-ish from downtempo to fast tempos between 127, 150, 172, and 174 BPM, so the listener can go from relaxed ecstasy to uncontrolled frenzy. It’s an intellectual album, supremely religious, but also full of emotions to enjoy on the dance floor with dreams of politics, soccer, and passion.
