Eddie Palmieri, the legendary pianist, bandleader, musician, and composer of Puerto Rican descent who revolutionized Latin jazz and salsa during a career spanning more than seven decades, has died at the age of 88. Palmieri died on Wednesday (August 6) at his home in New Jersey.

Eddie Palmieri was the first Latin artist to win a Grammy, the first time the Academy recognized a category for Latinos, at the 18th annual Grammy Awards in 1976. The category was called Best Latin Recording, and Palmieri took home the statuette for his iconic album “Sun of Latin Music.” Goodbye Palmieri.
