Author

By Carlos Passage

The Colombian singer has sung with some of Mexico’s most popular stars, including Luis R. Conriquez, Joss Favela, Alejandro Fernandez, Edwin Luna and Trakalosa de Monterey.

The biggest star of ‘Popular Music’ in Colombia (the national variant of Regional Mexican), Jessi Uribe will turn 38 on March 22. The Latin Grammy nominee was born in Bucaramanga, a city near the border with Venezuela, and in 2017 he became the most relevant star of the genre in Colombia thanks to the mega hit “Dulce Pecado.”

The so-called “Popular Music” known in the past as “Musica de Carrilera”, “Musica de Cantina”, “Musica de Despecho” or “Guasca” has been made since the middle of the last century and has influences from regional Mexican music in its variants: mariachi, corrido, norteña, huapango and is also influenced by Argentine tonadas and zambas and Ecuadorian and Peruvian pasillos.

Today stars of the new generation of “Popular Music” like Jessi Uribe fill stadiums and have hits on Billboard, something absolutely dreamed of by the pioneers of the genre.

And to celebrate her 38th birthday Jessi Uribe and her friends Alzate, Paola Jara, Jhonny Rivera, Pipe Bueno, Marbelle and Luisito Muñoz will perform this March 21 at La Macarena in Medellín.
