Liam Payne died after falling from a third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Prior to his death, local police received a phone call from the hotel, which reported the presence of a man displaying aggressive behaviour. No further information about the fall has been released.
Liam was best known as a key member of the British boy band One Direction, which also included Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan.
The group formed in 2010 and came out of the UK version of The X Factor. One Direction disbanded in 2016.
As a band, One Direction has completed 300 shows, four sold-out world tours, four number-one albums on the Billboard 200, six top 10 hits on the Hot 100, four MTV Video Music Awards, 28 Teen Choice Awards, two appearances on Saturday Night Live and billions of streams across streaming platforms.
After the group went on hiatus in 2015, Payne launched his solo career in 2017 with the song “Strip That Down,” which reached No. 10 on the Hot 100. After a string of singles, including Fifty Shades Freed’s “For You” featuring Rita Ora, “Get Low” featuring Zedd, and “Familiar” featuring J Balvin, Payne unveiled his first solo EP, “Fast Time,” in August 2018. His debut album, “LP1,” arrived in December 2019.
In 2021, Payne opened up about his substance abuse issues on the “Diary of a CEO” podcast, revealing his struggles with depression and addiction. However, in May 2023, Liam revealed that he had gone 100 days without alcohol.
In March 2024, Payne released his first new music in three years, a single titled “Teardrops,” which was co-written with *NSYNC member JC Chasez.
Just weeks before his death on October 2, Liam was spotted attending fellow One Direction member Niall Horan’s concert at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, where he waved to fans from a box seat.
Payne has a seven-year-old son named Bear Grey with 41-year-old British singer Cheryl Cole.
