Victory for Michael Jackson’s estate

Author

Michael Jackson’s estate has won a ruling approving the sale of the catalog to Sony for $600 million, despite objections from his mother Katherine Jackson who claimed the huge sale “violated Michael’s wishes.”

An appeals court ultimately said the superstar’s will gave his executors “broad powers” to sign such deals.

“The will gave the executors broad powers of sale, with no exception for the specific assets at issue in this case,” the court wrote. “As such, [a trial judge] did not err in concluding that it was Michael’s intent to allow the executors to sell assets of his estate, including those at issue in the proposed transaction.”

As reported earlier this year, Michael Jackson’s estate and Sony Music have reached an agreement to sell half of Michael Jackson’s publishing catalog and recorded masters for more than $600 million.
