Adele’s 10-night residency this August in Munich, which opened on Friday, could be the biggest concert ever, both in terms of attendance and ticket sales.
EIGHT DETAILS OF ADELE’S MUNICH “ADELE ARENA” RESIDENCE
- The shows, promoted by Live Nation Germany and Austrian group Leutgeb Entertainment, take place in a custom-built venue that seats 74,000 people, and is reported to have cost more than $100 million to produce, including the cost of construction.
- The 220-meter-wide screen is the largest in the world and has cost tens of millions of dollars.
- The 10 concerts could break the attendance record currently held by Coldplay with 627,000 fans across 10 shows in Buenos Aires in 2022.
- It could also break the box office record of nearly $110 million, held by U2 for its first 17 shows at the Sphere in Las Vegas last year.
- Adele, who is coming off residencies at Las Vegas’ Colosseum Caesars Palace, has not played in continental Europe since 2016, making the Munich shows a destination event.
- Concert residencies are becoming more popular, but they are primarily an American phenomenon. Munich is a relatively small city by international standards. It has a population of about 1.5 million. Greater Munich, including its suburbs, has a population of 2.7 million. The Munich metropolitan region, which extends to cities like Augsburg or Ingolstadt, has a population of 5.6 million.
- By comparison, Los Angeles has 3.9 million in a metropolitan area of 13.2 million.
- Tourism will bring a huge amount of money to Munich thanks to Adele’s 10 shows.
The city’s top economic official, Clemens Baumgärtner, has said that Adele’s residency will bring in 560 million euros ($614 million). The city is an ideal location for a concert residency, given its relative proximity to Austria, Italy and Switzerland.
