Winter Fest: Counterpoint with Ukraine, A Festival Unique in the World
March 3, join us for a spectacular and timely edition of our yearly Winter Fest, co-curated by Am I Jazz? Festival, the leading-edge jazz programmer in Kyiv, Ukraine. For more than two weeks, we’ll celebrate Ukraine’s unique and rich culture.
Coinciding with the one-year milestone of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, we’ve programmed a true cross-cultural collaboration between Ukraine-based artists and today’s lauded American jazz artists, including Jazzmeia Horn with the Marcus Shelby Orchestra, Vadim Neselovskyi, Dennis Adu, Ambrose Akinmusire & Rafiq Bhatia, Kassa Overall, Mark Guiliana, SJZ Collective & Yakiv Tsvietinskyi, Madison McFerrin, Ukrainian DJs Karine & Shakolin, dancer Alina Sokulska and and an exhibition of paintings by internationally-renowned Ukrainian artist Lesia Khomenko. Visit the website for our current lineup.
It’s a multidisciplinary program shining the light on the best of improvisational music, Ukrainian contemporary art, independent films and dance, exposing the intimate stories of Ukrainian artists fighting to keep their cultural identity that the Russian war in Ukraine seeks to erase.
In the words of Ukrainian curator Olga Bekenshtein: “Through all of these media we display sacred practices of ancient culture, fragile instants, love, dreams, aspirations—pieces of our lives worth fighting for.”
